Tennessee Williams Lived Here

I like literary stops when we are at new locations. A few years ago we took a tour of the Williams Residence in New Orleans. Although my taste in drama tends to Ibsen, Tennessee Williams is an icon. I had to see it.

The excellent tour guide told us that Tennessee Williams stayed in a bedroom overlooking the interior courtyard for a couple of months while vainly trying to get a WPA grant in 1939. Even his writerly success wasn’t smooth, though an icon from the mid-1940s onward.

The charm of the composing stories in the quiet, away from the hurly-burly of the Old Quarter street the house fronted, appeals even now.
