High vs One-Shot Performance
For years, I've been managing my work effort by objectives. If I need to work overtime, I do. Because I control my time, I feel pride and ownership of my work effort. Not all productive people work this way, but it works for many of us.
Recently we have new management. They start with insisting that we work overtime to meet arbitary intermediate targets. They also insist that we have daily morning meetings and end-of-day status reports.
What they don't realize is they are killing individual incentive to accomplish goals - because they have removed the ownership we individual workers had in the project. They have told us by their actions that they don't trust us to do our work.
Because we don't want to lose our jobs, we work hard, but hard feelings are growing.
