Sense and Sensibility
by Jane Austen
I couldn't read this entire novel,
so vexed was I by the indefiniteness of the characters. Mrs. Jennings had
no definite personality that I could latch onto for the longest time. Edward
was a non-person and Willoughby was charming but inconstant.
What clinched it for me was that neither sister was the main
character, so the difficulty of identifying with a female was compounded
by the lack of a constant perspective.
Some interesting spellings
There were passages where I was unsure of the meaning, some surely due to the passage of years and culture, but other times it seemed to be the impreciseness of expression.
Aug. 1, 2001 - perhaps I should get the video tape of
the movie and see how that appears to me.
